Named after the boat of America's Cup fame, the Courageous Sailing Center, a public charity established in 1987, is designed to afford every child of Boston, ages 8-20, with the opportunity to learn the sport of sailing free of charge. In addition, center offers sailing instruction and day cruises to the Harbor Islands.
You can learn everything from the basics to advanced skills, which come in handy if you compete in the Tuesday and Friday night racing series.
Half-day rentals are available if you want to unwind for a few hours on the water. You'll need to demonstrate ability or provide proof of boating certification.
The program uses proceeds from the adult and corporate sailing programs and private donations to subsidize the annual free children's program, which teaches kids responsible boating, the importance of self-discipline, decision-making, and teamwork, as well as an appreciation of our natural environment. The center is generously funded by a variety of sources including the city of Boston, adult membership dues, the Sponsor A Youth Sailor Program for individual donors, The Courageous Challenge, and grants and contributions from corporations and foundations nationwide. The Courageous Sailing Center has served thousands of children, 900 in 1998 alone.
For more information on Courageous Sailing Center give Bryan Peugh, Executive Director, a call at 617-242-3821.
